How to Select a Wall Clock

wall clock 01

First, some background on wall clocks.

1. What are the different types of wall clocks?

The main types of wall clocks on the market today are electric wave clocks, quartz clocks, and mechanical clocks, with time accuracy ranging from high to low. All three types of wall clocks are relatively common, with quartz wall clocks being the most commonly recommended because they are more suitable for household use, more affordable, and easier to use.

Here are some examples of wall clocks:

  • Mechanical clock: Mechanical clocks are powered by a spring system and operate on the pendulum principle. The appearance is characterized by a relatively strong mechanical color. However, timing accuracy is poor due to friction loss between machines.
  • Quartz clock: The most common type of household clock, based on the principle that when powered by electricity, quartz crystals vibrate at a constant frequency (32,768 Hz).It has a variety of appearances, making it ideal for room decoration.
  • Electric wave clock: Following the quartz electronic clock, the electric wave clock is a new generation of high-tech products that can automatically receive the national timing center of the radio signal, automatically correct the destination time for comparison, and completely eliminate the cumulative error of travel time. Many radio clocks also have a temperature measurement function, which is very popular in the market right now. The most well-known is the Japanese wave clock.

2. Is it better to sweep the second movement and jump the second movemen

In short, the main distinction between the two types of movements is the motor frequency. The motor frequency of the second sweep movement is relatively high, the second hand rotates at a uniform speed, and the sound is extremely subtle. The jump-second movement is only 1 Hz, which means the motor only rotates 180 degrees per second in a pulsating motion, producing a slight “ticking” sound.

Second, what should we look for when selecting a wall clock?

  • Step 1: Style Wall clocks are typically hung in prominent locations. If the style of the wall clocks does not match the decor of the room, it is easy to appear awkward. Choosing the right style of wall clocks can also serve as decoration, bringing life to an otherwise dull wall.
  • Step 2: Size When purchasing a wall clock, keep the size in mind. Too large can make the space appear crowded, while too small can make the space feel cramped, so choose the right size so that the two complement each other. You can refer to the specifications below: Small Bedroom and kitchen: 10 or 11 inches Bedroom and living room (15-20 square feet): 12 or 14 inches Large living room (20-40 square feet): 14 inches or 16 inches
  • Step 3: Sound When we introduce the type of movement, we can see that the sound produced by the sweep second movement is the lightest, so if you are sensitive to sound, the sweep second movement is preferable to the jump second movement.
  • Step 4: Batteries Battery: it is best to choose a carbon battery; do not use an alkaline battery because the voltage of an alkaline battery is high and can cause movement damage. Not only that, but an alkaline battery after a long time will occasionally exhibit leakage phenomena, resulting in movement damage. The carbon battery shell acts as a negative zinc tube in the battery’s chemical reaction, so it will leak over time; poor quality batteries for a few months will leak; alkaline batteries are made of steel and do not participate in chemical reactions, so they rarely leak. Carbon batteries typically have a one-year lifespan. (Tip: Carbon batteries are zinc-manganese batteries that contain the heavy metal chromium, which will harm the environment if discarded.)

Three: a radio clock or quartz clock is suitable.

The electric wave clock is essentially a quartz clock, and the main difference between it and the traditional quartz clock is that after receiving the standard time signal, it can automatically correct the time, which completely eliminates the cumulative error of the traditional clock that cannot be corrected and solves the problem of the traditional clock’s inconsistent time display. Quartz watches, no matter how accurate and high-quality they are, cannot solve their own time accumulation and time indication errors when compared to other watch products. In a nutshell, radio clocks can perfectly achieve standard time synchronization with zero cumulative error.

In addition to the aforementioned factors, when selecting a wall clock, if we have specific requirements for time accuracy, we recommend purchasing a radio clock, which is more expensive. Because quartz clock technology is so advanced, travel time errors can be very small.

Four, how to fix the broken movement

Movement has been the core component of the wall clock for a long time and will inevitably age. In fact, the majority of the market for above-the-wall clock movement replacement is relatively simple, as long as a small amount of effort is required to make two good changes. To give you some examples of movement replacement:

  • Luminous movement comparison, whether at night or in poor lighting conditions, does not recommend purchasing.
  • When replacing the movement, ensure that the hour and minute hands overlap at 12 o’clock and that the second hand is not used; otherwise, strange errors will occur, such as the minute hand returning to zero but the hour hand not being at the hour.
